What Your Child Is Learning in Spanish—First Weeks of 2026

January 14, 2026 Cesar A. Ponce de Leon

Spanish learning doesn’t start with worksheets—it starts with dynamism and confidence.

Over the past two weeks, students have been actively using Spanish in ways that matter: speaking, responding, and engaging with purpose. This update gives you a clear snapshot of what they’re learning, how they’re progressing, and why it matters for their long-term success.

Getting Comfortable in Spanish

The first priority in our classrooms is helping students feel comfortable using the language out loud.

Students are learning how to:

  • Greet one another naturally

  • Introduce themselves with confidence

  • Share basic personal information

They’re already working with:

  • Names and ages

  • Colors

  • Numbers (1–20)

  • Personal pronouns

  • The verbs ser and estar

All of this happens through games, songs, and guided conversation—not rote memorization.

One favorite activity so far has been “Conozcámonos”, a classroom game designed to help students interact in Spanish without pressure. Greeting songs reinforce pronunciation, rhythm, and listening skills, making Spanish feel familiar rather than intimidating.

The result: students are speaking earlier, more often, and with growing ease.

Talking About Family & Friends

Once students feel grounded, we expand their world.

In the past two weeks, lessons have focused on family and relationships, helping students talk about the people closest to them.

Students are learning:

  • Family and friend vocabulary

  • Adjectives

  • Articles and possessives

To apply this, students created their own family trees (árbol genealógico) and played matching and speaking games that reinforce comprehension while encouraging expression.

This matters because language sticks when it’s personal. Talking about family gives students meaningful reasons to speak—and that accelerates confidence.

Why This Matters

What’s most important isn’t the list of vocabulary—it’s how students are using it.

You’ll begin to notice that students:

  • Recognize Spanish words more quickly

  • Respond with less hesitation

  • Speak with more confidence and clarity

These early foundations are critical. When students learn to use Spanish early on, everything that follows—reading, writing, and cultural learning—comes more naturally.

This is how fluency begins. All instruction follows the Instituto Cervantes A1 School Curriculum, ensuring a clear, structured progression aligned with internationally recognized standards.

What’s Coming Next

In the coming weeks, students will continue building on these foundations through:

  • Deeper conversational practice

  • Cultural connections that reinforce language

  • Creative projects that make learning memorable

Each update will give you a clear window into what’s happening in the classroom—and how your child is growing.

DELE Exam 2025 | A Milestone of Growth, Excellence, and Purpose

November 25, 2025 Alejandra Martinez

This November, Isabella & Ferdinand® Academia de Español™ reached a defining moment in its commitment to elevate Spanish language education in Washington, D.C.: the successful completion of our largest and most meaningful DELE Exam Session to date.

While numbers tell part of the story — growing from 13 candidates in 2023 to nearly 80 in November 2025 — the true significance of this milestone lies far deeper. It represents the trust of our community, the consolidation of our academic standards, and the powerful role that language and culture play in shaping future generations.

A Journey of Growth Rooted in Purpose

Our DELE journey began modestly in 2023, with a vision to offer families and professionals in Washington, D.C. access to internationally recognized Spanish certification.
Year by year, that vision expanded:

  • 13 candidates in 2023

  • 19 and then 25 candidates in 2024

  • 36 candidates in May 2025

  • Nearly 80 candidates in November 2025

This growth is not accidental — it is the result of intentional work, academic rigor, and the deep conviction that language is more than communication: it is heritage, identity, and opportunity.

A Three-Month Operation Anchored in Excellence and Compliance

Behind this historic session was a carefully orchestrated, three-month effort, fully aligned with the strict international standards of Instituto Cervantes.
Every detail mattered — because every candidate mattered.

Our work included:

  • Accurate and secure management of registrations and official documentation

  • Step-by-step advising for candidates and families

  • Confidential handling of exam materials

  • Continuous coordination with Instituto Cervantes

  • Creation of detailed schedules for written and oral components

  • Assignment and oversight of Instituto Cervantes–accredited examiners

  • Preparation of controlled testing environments

  • On-site logistics across three days of intense operation

This level of coordination reflects not just organizational maturity — but a profound respect for the integrity and global value of the DELE certification.

The Power of a Committed Team

At the heart of this achievement was a team of more than 10 dedicated professionals:
coordinators, accredited examiners, teachers, volunteers, operational staff, and the Ethical Advisors communications & operations team.

Each person contributed with unwavering focus, ensuring that every candidate — from young school-aged learners to adults seeking official accreditation — experienced a process that was:

✔️ Organized
✔️ Respectful
✔️ Secure
✔️ Academically rigorous
✔️ Human-centered

Their collective work reflects our academy’s values: excellence, cultural stewardship, and community service.

More Than an Exam: An Institutional Responsibility

Being the only academy in Washington, D.C. authorized to administer all DELE levels carries profound responsibility.
This milestone confirms our commitment to uphold:

  • Academic excellence in every detail

  • Institutional integrity in every protocol

  • Cultural enrichment as the foundation of our teaching

  • Community trust, earned through transparency and professionalism

This November session was not simply an exam — it was a celebration of dedication, discipline, opportunity, and identity.

A Weekend That Marks Our History

76 candidates.
3 days.
A fully accredited, international operation.
A united team.

This session stands as one of the most meaningful accomplishments in the history of Isabella & Ferdinand® Academia de Español™. It represents the culmination of hard work, vision, and community support — and the beginning of an even brighter chapter.

Looking Ahead: May 2026 and Beyond

As we celebrate this achievement, we also look forward.
Our preparations for DELE May 2026 are already underway, grounded in the same principles that define us: cultural heritage, academic excellence, and a commitment to serving our community with purpose.

October 21, 2025 Alejandra Martinez

Isabella & Ferdinand® Academia de Español™ participates in the 4th Conference on the Teaching of Spanish for Heritage Speakers (4ª Jornada sobre la Enseñanza del Español para Hablantes de Herencia) at the Instituto Cervantes of New York

In October 2025, representatives from Isabella & Ferdinand® Academia de Español™ participated in the 4th Conference on the Teaching of Spanish for Heritage Speakers (4ª Jornada sobre la Enseñanza del Español para Hablantes de Herencia), organized by the Instituto Cervantes of New York in collaboration with Fairfield University, Columbia University, and City College of New York.

The conference, held under the theme “Social Justice: Equitable Access of Minorities to Bilingual Education” (Justicia social: acceso equitativo de las minorías a la educación bilingüe), brought together leading scholars, researchers, and educators committed to promoting inclusion and equity in the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language.

Maira Abasto, Academic Director, and Susana Paredes, DELE Coordinator, attended the event alongside a group of Isabella & Ferdinand® teachers, as part of the Academy’s ongoing efforts to promote professional development and pedagogical excellence among its faculty.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in keynote lectures and workshops led by renowned experts, including Dr. María Luisa Parra (Harvard University) and Dr. María Carreira (California State University), who explored practical approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion in Spanish-language instruction. The conference also featured specialized sessions led by Alejandro Acero (University of Oregon), Ivette Dobarganes (Stephen T. Mather Building Arts & Craftsmanship High School), and Beatriz Uzal (Instituto Cervantes of Los Angeles).

This participation reinforces Isabella & Ferdinand®’s institutional commitment to fostering continuous learning, intercultural dialogue, and innovation in bilingual education. It also strengthens the Academy’s collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, the global authority in Spanish language and culture.

At Isabella & Ferdinand®, professional development represents a cornerstone of educational excellence and a bridge to connect our educators with the broader academic community devoted to advancing Spanish-language teaching in multicultural contexts.

🎓 Celebrating the Completion of the English Program for Nursing Assistants

September 22, 2025 Alejandra Martinez

This fall, 18 Hispanic adults proudly completed our English Program for Nursing Assistants, developed in partnership with Identity Youth. Designed specifically for aspiring and current nursing assistants, the course focused on practical English language skills needed in medical and caregiving contexts.

Over the course of several months, participants worked diligently on building vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and practicing real-life scenarios that they will encounter in healthcare settings. The program emphasized communication, confidence, and cultural understanding, all essential tools for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

While Isabella & Ferdinand® is widely recognized as a Spanish academy, we are equally committed to providing English-language programs that meet the needs of our community. This initiative reflects our mission to support learners not only in embracing the Spanish language and culture, but also in empowering bilingual professionals to thrive in their workplaces and daily lives.

The culmination of this course represents much more than the end of a class — it is a milestone in empowering individuals to succeed professionally, access better opportunities, and provide compassionate care to patients. It also highlights the transformative power of collaboration between nonprofits and community organizations in creating pathways to education and employment.

We congratulate every student for their commitment and growth, and we thank our partner Identity Youth for joining us in this mission. Together, we are not only teaching languages, but also building bridges to a brighter future.

“At Isabella & Ferdinand®, we believe that language is not only a tool for communication, but a bridge to opportunity. Seeing 18 dedicated Hispanic adults complete this English program is a powerful reminder of how education can transform lives and open doors to brighter futures.”

🥑 Whole Foods Supports Our Community with a Special Donation

September 22, 2025 Alejandra Martinez

At Isabella & Ferdinand® Academia de Español™, our mission extends beyond teaching Spanish. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where children and families feel connected, supported, and inspired.

This month, we were delighted to receive a generous donation of healthy snacks from Whole Foods Market. While it may seem like a small gesture, the impact goes far beyond the treats themselves. Sharing these snacks with our students created moments of joy, fueled their learning with energy, and reminded us of the importance of partnerships between local businesses and community organizations.

By supporting our programs, Whole Foods is investing in the well-being of children and reinforcing the idea that education flourishes when community members come together. It is a beautiful reminder that when we unite efforts — schools, families, and businesses — we can build a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Whole Foods Market for believing in our mission and for making a difference in the daily lives of our students.
